Topic: Hey hey

Good morning, Nick.

This is Dad. I know, I am slightly early, and I guess you will be still asleep. But I just have a question. Could you come over to Gustavo’s Hangar tomorrow?

So far Gustavo and me finished most stuff on the Albatros according to your blueprints, sketches and calculations. The hull’s interior airframe is fully completed, the wings are finished, too. What still needs to be done, is integrating them to the aircraft’s body, as well as building avionics and instruments.

As you wanted, we delivered your blueprints and calculations to a friend for cross checks. To be true, he was quite impressed with your work and would like to contact you over the next few days for some further questions *Chuckles.

Anyway, he said that you did an extremely clean and well researched work. Especially your drafts for the Aircraft engine and mechanic were extremely clean – at least he said so.

He also asked, who did all the plans for the double decker. At first I thought that I should tell him that I did all the work… *Chuckles*

Sorry, I am just kidding. Of course I responded, that it was done by you, Nicky. Chuckles. But anyway, Max seemed to be surprised, that a younger guy of your age would still be interested in historical aircraft engineering. I do not know why he thought so, since I believe even old things can be nice ones. Look at me… Chuckles.

Also, he asked what you were doing. So I told him that you were starliner pilot and just changed from Intergalactic to Atlas last April. I hope that was okay for you.

Anyway, I know, I am talking to much. I would be happy if you could come over to the airfield tomorrow.

By the way, I met Indy today while shopping at cassaba. She looked good so far and misses you. She told that Atlas is currently training you for long range operations. I have to say, I am currently really impressed by the path you are taking. So it looks like you will be a long range passenger pilot soon.

But back to Indy. Not that I would be curious, but you have been together quite a while together. How long is it now? Three years? Have you ever thought about the road you want to go with her? I mean she is a family girl. Everybody can clearly see and feel it, when she fetches Isa and takes her to the Zoo, the Aquapark or the playground.

I mean, I feel that she prepares for a family. She is now 27 and she doesn’t want to hang in an aircraft cabin the rest for her life. So you should think about which road you want to go with her over the next few years.

I mean, if you are true you are a family man, also. You will say no now, but I will have to reply, that you would not have sacrificed your position in ICC, if family would not important for you.

I mean I am your dad, Nicky, and I know you quite well. I have the impression sometimes, that you just are reluctant to family building because you are afraid of the unknown.

But you can also see it this way – love, live, kids and partnership are less dangerous than navigating an uncharted Nebula. You as ICC pilot should definitely know it.

But anyway, Nicky, I need to hop to Gustavo now. We want to do some paintings on the red baron’s tail fin. I hope to see you tomorrow. Fat big hugs.

Dad

Topic: Hey…

Hello Dad,

I just arrived at Goss Interstellar and handed over the Starliner to the next cockpit and cabin crew. Atlas has a rather disciplined flight schedule. Most Starliners are enroute more or less permanently with very few ground time.

Additionally, manual flying is obligatory procedure, only permitted in case of single pilot cockpit procedures – like pilot unconsciousness or cockpit door failure.

And Yeppi, you heard right, I am participating in Interstellar Long Range Operation Trainings. I haven’t got any time schedule for it by Human Resources Department, but if I understood it right, I will be destined for external training this months. I wonder whether Atlas plans to swap me to another starship type too.

Well concerning Indy… *Chuckles* Yes she literally smells for marriage, family and children. She currently hangs at my heels because of this dance course participation. Jesus, with my personal talent it will be a complete fail… At least for me, not for Indy :’-)))

But to answer your question, Dad – On the one hand, I feel great with her and somehow would love building a common future with her. I mean she is loyal, she is friendly, sly, educated and sexy. You will hardly find such talents in a person together.

On the other hand, I am not sure whether this is the right moment for building a family. We just joined Atlas, and we still have to achieve our merits. You know what I mean? We are just part of this company since three months. If we would be there since a couple of years, I would say: ‘Yes, awesome moment. Let us try it together.’

Additionally, I am not sure how to address that topic to Indy properly. You know, she is terribly romantic – roses, candles, a dinner at the beach, and so on. I am exactly the contrary. I am rationalist, believe in logic and – that is may be the worst factor at all – I am terribly anti romantic. I feel if not asking properly I would just receive a blunt ‘no, sorry I don’t want to.’ I guess that scares me more here.

Hey Nicky,

Good to hear from you.

Oh come on. Just relax. I am sure that Indy does not expect you to do a romantic marriage proposal to her. She knows you quite well and also knows that you are more the kind of rational person. I guess that Indy would just love to hear a marriage proposal at all – with no big pathos or so.

And I am even more sure, she would not say no to your proposal. Indy just has eyes for you, when you both are here, and even outside she sticks to your side most of the time. I mean she just left intergalactic because of you… For you…. I wish your mom would have ever treated me this way, when we were together… Chuckles.

But if you feel unsure about it – why don’t you ask Sue? She is literally Indy’s best friend. I am sure she can tell you even more about your girlfriend’s position in this topic.

And concerning the right point of time. Nicky, is there always a right point of time in life? I mean if you just choose to wait, it can be that you wait forever. Maybe today it is the new job, tomorrow it is the promotion, next week it is another manager or a change of your hub.

I know, I taught you this logic. But with some years now on my back I would also tell you – Don’t center your job around your private life. The things should be exactly vice versa. You can’t sleep with your job, it won’t give you kids or family. You know what I mean?

Topic: Your blueprints of the Albatros D2 reconstruction

Good afternoon, Nick…

I hope it is okay, that I frankly call you this way. I know – we haven’t met that much at the airfield – but I still remember you from the summer fastival last year.

Well, let me just introduce myself, in case you do not remember. My name is Miyazaki Sakura and I am Professor and chairman of the faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Goss Polytechnic University.

Well, your dad asked me to cross check some of your blueprints, as well as the calculations underlying them. Just for my personal understanding – you want to reconstruct one of the oldest fighter planes, known in the history of mankind? The Albatros D. V, flown by Baron von Richthofen, also called the Red Baron?

Well, I am impressed now. If Rich, Gustavo and you really get this thing done and manage to lift it up into the air, you will definitely get some attention by the medias. And I am sure that some friends of mine at Esperia would also love to share your experience during aircraft planning and construction.

But back to the topic – I read your studies and drafts with considerable interest. You have chosen a very historical approach to reconstruct the plane. So method I applied was researching original blue prints and information? Right? Method 2 came into game, when you did not find proper material about the plane? Here you choose the transfer method, comparing the Albatros with similar airplanes of that time and deriving unknown information out of similar musters. Right?

Well, I was not that historical during my cross checks. What mattered for me was just the flight worthiness, that could be expected from your drafts. Consequently, I took a more mathematical, technical and physical approach to it, but I am close to your results. Very close.

By matter of internal structure, wings and hull, the bird you drafted is very much stable. The cables, tubes and pipes, planned for steering, fuel flow and electricity, were used slightly extensive, but your dad said, that you were favoring a cautious approach. So this is okay too. But just keep that in mind if you focus on the motor.

Aileron, Rudder and elevator movement of your drafts also grants a maneuverability that comes close to the original Albatros, at least what is known about it. I added some proposals for changes. You can use them, but it is not a must. It would lead to some weight reduction only, but it would not change overall aircraft performance.

What is a different number is the Aircraft engine. Little is know about petrochemical motors of early 20s century. So getting it reconstructed is a major issue – at least for somebody without proper knowledge of technology history.

But may be I can help you with it. I know a gentleman down in the faculty of history with some deep rooted knowledge in development of combustion motors. So if you like – why don’t you come over to my office at the University and I will introduce you to the guy.

Just leave me a short message, if you want to come over. I will ask Laurence to be around, too.

Kind regards

Max

Topic: your drafts of the Albatros D. V

Hello Professor Dr. Dr. Sakura,

Thank you very much for your reply. Of course I remember you from the summer fastival last year.

But to be true, I am a big fan of your books. Actually I used your compendium ‘Astrophysics and Spacecraft Navigation. Theoretical applications for pilots in command and spacecraft navigators.’ extensively during my time in the ICC. It was a great guideline for everything that can happen to you, when navigating outside conventional spacelanes.

Concerning to your question. Yes, I favor a tight historic approach. It is more or less a tick of Gustavo. He wants the bird as close to the original as it can be. So I had to creep through some libraries and universities the last few months. Sadly, available data was rather sparse. So I had to look over the edge of the plate by comparing different aircraft musters and deriving required information from here. I know, that is not really the most clean approach to solving this matter. But at least, I would keep track to the conventional aircraft technology of early 20s century.

But before I start to forget this issue – Thank you very much for your invitation. Of course I would be happy to come over and speak about the combustion motors. If it would okay for you, I would also like to review the drafts with you. So, would Monday at 12.30 work?

Yes, tomorrow, 12.30, will be a good time. Meet me in office 12.07, Section 3, Building 12. If you like you can head with Laurence and me into the canteen if you like. Even if it is university food, it is not that bad.

See you tomorrow

Hey Nicky,

I just came home and checked our mails. There was a letter addressed to you and me. So, I thought you would not mind if I read it.

Anyway, it was a letter from a school for modern and classic dancing. So you really signed us in for a course? I am so excited now. Jesus, thank you so much. I never thought that you would finally do it. So when do we start?

Hopps on spot, bounces and gives you a big fat kiss.

Indy.

Hello, Baby.

Home in some minutes. I just headed to the gym for circle training.

Well, the course is modulary. We can start anytime we want to and do not need to continue the course in a straight line. I mean we both have our job, and while enroute, we won’t have the chance to continue the course without any interruptions. So a modular course was the best option for me.

So if you like we can directly start this or next week. What do you think?

Hey, Vic…

It is me, Nick… I hope you still remember me after running slightly amok at Intergalactic…. :-))))

Anyway, I am sorry for the late reply. But I wanted the things to settle down a bit. Not that I would be scared or so. But I am not really happy to speak about the madhouse climate of our former employer never the less.

Anyway, I started working for Atlas now als transportation pilot. I like the organisation around, since it is calmer and more drama free. Additionally, I can focus on the things I really want to do. And this is naturally… Flying… Flying… Flying.

Indy feels well too here. Although I think that she won’t hang into cabin for the rest of her life. In fact, she dragged me to a classical dance course this months. Jesus, the first session was yesterday and had the Flair of a drama. I wonder that Indy hardly can walk, when I remember how much I stepped on her feet.

Currently we think about doing a short trip to Italy, Sol System, for this weekend or so. But we still have to check it out.

Otherwise we are fine here. But what I want to ask is the following. We will invite to a barbecue at dad’s house this afternoon. Wouldn’t you and your folks like to come over too?

Hey, Nick.

Good to hear and don’t worry about the break you took. I just understand that you needed a moment of silence after all the drama here.

Additionally, I met Indy recently at the spaceport. So she also briefed me how you were doing.

So you are joining a dance course recently? Whewwww, whewwww. Sounds serious. I still remember mine, it was as depressing as yours. Honey, dancing around me gracefully with her high heels and cocktail gown, and me mostly staring down, trying not to hit her feet. Even my UEE Marines training was more relaxing and cozy.

But back to Indy and you. I also remember how much Indy pushed you into this direction also this winter. ‘Nicky, can’t we…?’, ‘Nicky, why don’t we…?’ She is stubborn here and so it was just a matter of time that you would give in to her pleadings. But my compliments – at least you resisted longer than I thought. I mean we already have August. Chuckles.

And hey, we will be in Italy too the next couple of weeks. Just let us know when you are there. May be we could meet for a Gelato or two? Or a bottle of wine. I mean after three months of silence you will definitely have some stuff to tell.

Concerning the barbecue. Sure, we would love to. Is it okay that we take the girls with us? Sadly our au pair left this week.

Howdy, Nicky. I just came home from shopping with Sue. I hope you still remember her, your younger sister :-p I got a new cocktail gown for the dance course. I am sure you will love it. It is a long purple gown with a high side cut.

But while we were talking about dancing – I have to say that you performed quite well in the dancing course for somebody that never danced for a minute in all the years before. So I am looking forward to our next course session. Really…

But there is another thing we need to talk about, Nicky. I saw Lea yesterday. How old is she now? I saw her ‘cuddling’ with a guy in downtown park…. Oh well, what can be considered cuddling somehow. Other would call it polishing the back of her throat.

Not that I want to dig to deep in your family issues. But did somebody speak or spoke with her about contraception and birth control? I mean being teen mom isn’t that fun either. And according to what I see and feel in our partnership, I have the impression that your parents were as reluctant with her as with you. So it would be good if somebody takes care of that matter. I rather doubt that anybody in your family is hot on getting aunt, grandpa or uncle.

I just ask, because I have a good touch to her. I don’t want to put this issue into Sue’s hands. I mean, there are worlds between Sue’s Hammer-and-Anvil-Paedagogics and Lea’s shy and reluctant personality.

Additionally, I think that a woman should adress this issue with her. I mean, the last person I ever wanted to speak about birth control were my dad or brother. You know what I mean? So, if you like I can also take her to Janice, my Gyn. I also have an appointment there next week.

I would just kindly request that you talk with your dad about that issue. You are better suited to to do that than me – as your girlfriend.

Hugs and fat kisses

Indy

Anyway, I really loved the barbecue yesterday. You looked awesome in your little black dress. And before you started to worry again. Yes, you behaved properly. At least until the guests were there 🙂 And the rest is a secret. Anyway, Vic and family also say thank you to the barbecue party and invite us for September as a thank you, Sue and Dad liked it too.

By the way – I spoke with dad about Lea. He did not even know, that she had a boyfriend. So he was quite hurt, that she spoke not with him initially. But I just told him, that there were some subjects, that you won’t address with your parents at all. And birth control belongs to this category.

Anyway, dad says thank you and handed me Lea’s medical card. So if you like you can hop with Lea to Janice and take care of that issue. Dad also handed me a written permission authorizing you to handle this issue.

But anyway, just one short question. Why did you have an appointment at the gyn?

Nickolas Mercier

First Officer Nickolas Mercier was born in 2914 on Goss III. His father being a Navy Officer and his mother being a Nurse, he somehow merged with the differing interests in his family. Being sly and educated, well-mannered and long-term oriented, he somehow lacked all qualities necessary for his dream profession: becoming a fighter pilot. Although he learned aeronautics pretty early due to his Dad, Nick showed no sign of evidently necessary combat pilot qualities like intuition, agressivity and tactical focus. So he failed his Navy Combat Pilot Test in 2935. What can be a lack of qualities in one branch was his benefit in another. So he sucessfully passed his test for United Empire of Earth Imperial Center of Cartography in the same year and became Pilot in 23rd Exploration Group. He earned his merits there for being a skilled pilot, serving on an Andromeda Class Vessel in his final stages of service. In 2946 he surprisingly mustered out after his mother´s death and joined Intergalactic Airlines, gaining his Type Rating for Genesis Starliners in 2947 and advancing to management and flight instructor position rapidly. In 2949 he changed his employer and joined Atlas Defense Industry as transportation pilot for roughly a year. Prefering a career in civil aerospace transportation though, he skipped to Extensive Enterprises becoming Chief Pilot in 2950. Due to his experience in Starline Operation he was nominated as Interim Operations Manager for Swift Starlines - a small semi-bancrupt passenger and cargo transportation company in the same year, effectively managing to lead the company out of it´s financial within a year.
